Peter B
Chapter
1
1
Simon Peter a slave and an apostle of Jesus Christ to the equally
precious ones who have with us obtained faith in the righteousness of
our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2 May grace and peace be multiplied
to you by a full knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
3 As his
divine power has given to us all things belonging to life and piety
through the full knowledge of the one who called us to his own glory
and virtue, 4 through which things he has given to us the very great
and precious promises, in order that through these you might become a
sharer of the divine nature, escaping from the corruption in
the world caused
by lust. 5 But also for this very reason with
all diligence bring in supply of virtue into
your faith, and into
virtue
knowledge, 6 and into
knowledge self-control, and into
self-control
endurance, and into
endurance piety, 7 and into
piety brotherly friendship, and into
brotherly friendship love. 8 For these things being in you and
abounding makes you neither barren nor unfruitful in full knowledge
of our Lord Jesus Christ; 9 for in whom these things are not present,
he is blind and short-sighted, being forgetful of the cleansing of
his sins in times past. 10 Wherefore rather, brothers, be diligent to
make your calling and choice firm; for doing these things you will by
no means ever fail. 11 For so the entrance into the eternal kingdom
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly supplied to
you.
12 Wherefore I will intend always to remind you concerning
these things, though you know them and have been confirmed in the
present truth. 13 And I deem it right, so long as I am in this
tabernacle, to rouse you by a reminder, 14 knowing that the putting
off of my tabernacle is soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ made
clear to me; 15 and I will be also be diligent to cause you to always
have the memory of these things after my exodus. 16 For we did not
make the power and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ known to you by
following cleverly devised fables, but we were eyewitnesses of his
majesty. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when
such a voice was borne to him by the magnificent glory, “This is my
Son, my beloved, in whom I am well pleased;” 18 and we heard this
voice that was sent out of heaven when we were with him in the holy
mountain. 19 And we have the more firm prophetic word, to which you
do well to take heed as to a lamp shining in a murky place, until the
day dawns and the daystar rises in your hearts; 20 firstly knowing
this, that
no
prophecy of scripture comes about of its own interpretation;
21 for prophecy was not brought at any time by will of man, but men
spoke from God while
being carried by the Holy Spirit.
Chapter
2
But
there were also false prophets among the people, as indeed there will
be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive
opinions, and having brought them they have denied the Master,
bringing swift destruction on themselves; 2 and many will follow
their licentiousness, because they will blaspheme the way of truth; 3
and by covetousness they will make merchandise of you with fabricated
words; for whom the judgment of old does not linger, and their
destruction does not slumber. 4 For if God did not spare the angels
who sinned, but consigned them to Tartarus, delivered to pits of
darkness to be kept for judgment, 5 and did not spare the ancient
world, but guarded the eighth man Noe, a herald of righteousness,
when a flood was brought on a world of impious men, 6 and condemned
the cities of Sodom and Gomorra covering them with ashes by an
overthrow, having made an example of men who intend to live
impiously, 7 and delivered righteous Lot who was oppressed
by the licentious conduct of the lawless; 8 for dwelling among them
that righteous man was tormented day after day in his soul with
seeing and hearing their lawless works; 9 the Lord knows how
to deliver pious men out of trial, but to keep unjust men for being
punished on
a day of judgment, 10 and most of all the ones who go after flesh in
defiling lust and who despise dominion. Self-satisfied darers, they
do not tremble at blaspheming glories, 11 where angels who are
greater in strength and power do not bring railing judgment against
them before the Lord. 12 But these men, as natural animals without
reason who were born for capture and corruption, railing in things of
which they are ignorant, indeed they will be corrupted in their
corruption, 13 suffering wrong as wages of wrong; who deem it
pleasure to luxuriate in the daylight, spots and blemishes reveling
in their deceits feasting along with you, 14 having eyes full of an
adulteress and not ceasing from sin, alluring unsteady souls, having
a heart exercised in covetousness, cursed children; 15 forsaking a
straight way they erred, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor,
who loved the wages of wrong, 16 and was reproved of his own
transgression; a dumb ass speaking with a man's voice restrained the
prophet's madness. 17 These men are waterless springs and mists
being driven along by a storm, for whom the gloom of darkness has
been kept. 18 For speaking immoderate words of vanity they allure
through the excessive lusts of the flesh the ones almost
escaping those who live in error, 19 promising freedom to them,
but
themselves being slaves of corruption, for by whom anyone has been
defeated, to this man he has been enslaved. 20 For if they
have escaped the defilements of the world by a full knowledge of
the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but
then
become entangled by these again they have been defeated, the
last things have become to them worse than the first. 21 For it was
better for them to have not fully known the way of righteousness,
than after
fully knowing it
to
turn from the holy commandment that
was
delivered to them. 22 The thing of the true proverb has happened to
them, “The dog returns to its own vomit,” and,
“The washed sow to wallowing in mud.”
Chapter 3
Now, beloved, I write this second epistle to you, in which by reminder I rouse your sincere mind, to remember the words that have previously been spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of your Lord and Savior through the apostles, 3 firstly knowing this, that during the last days mockers will come in mocking and going according to their own lusts and saying, “Where is the promise of His presence? For from the day when the fathers fell asleep, all things remain the same from the beginning of creation.” 5 For wishing this were so has concealed from them that the heavens were of old and the earth by the water and through the water was held together by the word of God, through which the world then perished by being inundated by water; 7 but the present heavens and the earth are stored up and being kept for fire in a day of judgment and destruction of impious men. 8 But do not let this one thing be concealed from you, beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow of the promise, as some deem slowness, but is longsuffering toward you, not purposing any to perish but all men to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing sound, and the elements will pass away burning, and the earth and the works in it will be laid bare. 11 All these things being dissolved this way, what sort of men should you be in holy conduct and piety, 12 awaiting and hastening the presence of the day of God, on account of which the heavens having been set on fire will be dissolved and the burning elements will melt. 13 But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. 14 Wherefore, beloved, as you await these things be diligent to be found by him in peace, spotless and unblemished, 15 and deem the Lord's longsuffering of us as salvation, as indeed our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, 16 as also in all his epistles he speaks in them concerning these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the unlearned and unsteady also twist as they do the remaining scriptures to their own destruction. 17 Therefore knowing these things before, beloved, be on your guard lest being led away by the error of the lawless you fall from your own stability, 18 but grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him is the glory both now and unto an ageless day.
